Mets first baseman Jared Young was removed from the field on a cart Thursday night after a frightening collision with pitcher Nolan McLean during New York’s 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.
The collision occurred in the sixth inning as McLean and Young moved towards first base while attempting to field a slow ground ball from Justin Crawford.
Young was struck in the head by McLean’s knee during the collision and fell face-first onto the field. He remained stationary for a period of time before medical personnel rushed to his side.
New York manager Andy Green later reported that Young had undergone a CT scan at a hospital that had returned negative results.
Green stated that Young was experiencing concussion symptoms, however had full use of his extremities.
“It was a terrifying moment on a baseball field. Took him a while to come to. It was a really scary collision,” said Green.

The Phillies had taken a 1-0 lead when Crawford hit a slow ground ball towards the right side of the infield.
McLean initially moved towards first base as Young adjusted his position near the bag. After briefly slowing down, McLean continued towards first base as Young reached for the ball with his right hand and attempted to maintain his foot on the base.
The two players collided as Crawford reached first.
McLean’s knee struck Young in the head causing him to fall to the ground. He remained motionless as players from both teams gathered around him.
Mets coaches and an athletic trainer quickly arrived onto the field. A medical cart was then summoned to assist Young.
Francisco Lindor described the scenario as particularly frightening for the Mets.
“It was scary to sit there and just know that he wasn’t with us in that moment. He was just somewhere else,” said Lindor.
Young Eventually Regained Consciousness
After Young regained consciousness, Green stated that the first baseman asked what had transpired.
Young was placed on the medical cart and immobilized before being removed from the field. He gave a thumbs-up as he was transported away from the playing area.
Green later revealed that Young’s CT scan had returned negative results.
“He’s had a CT scan. Results have come back negative,” said Green.
The manager added that Young was still exhibiting concussion symptoms, however had full use of his arms and legs.
For the Mets, the negative CT scan was welcome news following what appeared to be a potentially serious injury.
Mets Players React to the Collision
The incident left players from both teams visibly concerned.
McLean appeared shaken immediately following the collision and remained near the area as medical personnel attended to Young.
Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez appeared to pray while players observed from the field and digouts.
Philadelphia third baseman Alec Bohm also took a knee near third base as Young received medical attention.
McLean initially remained in the game and completed the inning. The Green, however decided to refrain from sending him back onto the mound for the seventh inning.
“Still was willing to go back out the next inning. Didn’t feel that was in his best interest at that point in time,” said Green.
Tobias Myers replaced McLean to begin the seventh inning.
Jared Young’s 2026 Season
Young, 31, has become a regular first baseman for the Mets as he enters his first full major league season.
Before the injury, Young was batting .266 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs over 103 games.
The first baseman had previously missed approximately six weeks earlier in the season due to a left knee injury.
The Mets will now monitor Young as he recovers from the concussion symptoms.
