Chemicals that are used in swimming pools include different kinds of disinfectants and sanitisers.  These work to control growth of algae and various other kinds of bacteria in pool water. In large pools chlorine gas are also used.

Safely handle chemicals that are used in swimming pools

Those disinfectants that are chlorine based can be called as chlorinating liquid, liquid chlorine or dry chlorine. Dry chlorine are tablets or granules while chlorinating liquid or liquid chlorine are solutions that dissolve in water. However, one has to be careful while using and storing these chemicals.

Chemicals that are used in pools can also be oxidizers and corrosives. Oxidising materials can react chemically and oxidise combustible materials. The material combines with other materials and increases the hazards of fire explosion.

There are many pool chemicals that are corrosive. These materials can affect and destroy body tissues on contact. It can damage skin, eyes, digestive tract and respiratory tract.

Storing these chemicals

It is essential to store any chemicals for swimming pool away from sunlight in a cool and dry place. Make sure that the storage place is well ventilated. In high temperature vapours may build up inside container. Nose or throat irritation or other problems may result if this vapour is inhaled. It is not safe to store chemicals near gasoline, tile cleaners, fertilizers, turpentine or other flammable materials. It is ideal to dispose the container after liquid inside it is used. Keep the liquid away from pets and children.
